San Diego is a great place for a dog to work and play. Throughout the county, dogs have leash-free beaches, parks and hiking trails. There are a number of unique services for dogs and their owners and a variety of businesses cater to K9 customers. Escondido's Mayflower Park - One and one-half acres of fenced leash-free space makes Mayflower Dog Park a great place for dogs and people to socialize.

Your Dog Can be a Good Citizen - Every dog needs to learn to be a good citizen to enjoy all the dog friendly places in San Diego. Susan Robertson has 25 years experience training dogs of all ages. Wednesday nights are "pay as you go" brush-up classes with obedience and play time in equal portions.

San Diego City Off-leash Beaches and Parks - San Diego City maintains two off-leash beaches: Fiesta Island and Dog Beach. There are also a number of off-leash areas in the city parks (individual parks are listed below). Balboa Park hosts three off leash areas listed here. Read the rules, hours and other restrictions before heading out with your K9 friends (we don't want them to be disappointed).

San Diego City "Trial" Off-Leash Parks - The City of San Diego has a one-year "Trial" Off-Leash Park program. Here you will find a number of park that are participating.

Poway Dog Park - Poway Dog Park has three fenced off-leash areas for dogs of assorted sizes (Area 1 is for small dogs; Area 3 is the largest and most popular). Click on the events for information on classes and other scheduled K9 activities.

Maddox Neighborhood Park in Mira Mesa - The leash free area is open from dawn to dusk and provides a fenced area for dogs to exercise, socialize, and train off leash.

Dog Paddling: take your dog on a kayak - Among other dog-friendly kayak trips, paddle with your K9 friend to leash free Fiesta Island.

Leash Free in Encinitas! - Rancho Coastal Humane Societyhas established a privately owned community dog park. The leash free area is nearly an acre in size, grass covered and shaded in part. Dogs have their own water fountain.

Chula Vista Area - Chula Vista Community and Neighborhood parks generally allow leashed dogs (and cats) throughout the park. Read the rules, hours and other information, then select "Parks Location". If you're new to this area, start by walking your dog along the walking trail at Rohr Park.

Penasquitos Canyon - Your dog can hike with you on a leash (8' maximum) in much of Panasquitos canyon. Check rules and regulations at this link before hiking.

San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve - Your dog can hike with you on a leash (6' maximum) in much of San Elijo Lagoon. This is a fragile ecological reserve so please be strict about both the leash and it's length. Even short runs off the paths that allow dogs can destroy nesting areas and other sensitive habitats.

San Dieguito County Park - Your dog can hike with you on a leash (6' maximum) in all of San Dieguito County Park. This is one of the best places in all of San Diego for one-to three mile hikes over hilly terrain. Start and end at the lower duck pond for a beautiful stroll.
