A Great Place to Gather Acorns - This hike takes you through hundreds of oak trees where Native Americans gathered acorns. Take a backpack and gather acorns in the fall when they are ripe. Then prepare them for eating. A book on the subject is available at : Acorn and Eat 'em.

Winter Hawk Watch - Every January and February the Wildlife Research Institute sponsors weekend hawk watches. Volunteers watch for a variety birds of prey under the direction of the Institu . The weekly watches start at the Ramona Grasslands at 9 a.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

View Sea Turtles by Kayak - Get close to sea turtles by kayak. This adventure operator also sponsors kayak tours of La Jolla Caves and other special sites.

Whale Watching by Kayak - Generally available during January and February (wetsuits included). Obviously, this is for the more adventuresome. The operator claims no experience is necessary.

Visit a Wolf Preserve - Open to the public Saturdays (by reservation) and during the week (by special arrangement). A past fire took the lives of four of the thirty wolves; all remaining wolves survived this year's fire. This nonprofit organization would welcome your membership fee or donation.

Back Country Guides - Ask for special tours to see the wildlife of your choice. They'll take you there, feed you, and bring you back. Specify: Novice, Intermediate, or Extreme.

Volcan Mountain - One of the thirteen wildlife preserves managed by the San Diego County Department of Parks and Recreation. Evening tours encounter owls and other nocturnal wildlife.

See Marine Wildlife up Close - The Birch Aquarium in La Jolla has a number of special events every month ranging from tidepool visits to snorkeling La Jolla Cove and diving with sharks. Click on a month in the drop-down menu for a schedule.

Sleep Over At the San Diego Zoo - Schedule a night camping in San Diego's Zoo listening to the sounds of the wild from inside a cozy tent.

Book a Photo Caravan at Wild Animal Park - Ride in the back of a truck into the animal compounds at San Diego's Wild Animal Park and get close to the action. Don't forget your camera - it's called a photo caravan, after all.
